First Love

He looked closely at the back of her hands and saw how thin her skin was. He could feel her veins pulsating. It was reassuring to him, she was alive.
Do you remember your first love? Do you remember how you lost your first love?
He did. He remembered her. from her deep brown eyes to the flaws on her skin, he hadn't forgotten any detail.
He knew the day he saw her walking towards him in a grey dress that he would wake up to this face everyday. She did not believe him when he said it. She didn't believe fairy tales would ever come true. She didn't think dragons could be slayed and happy ever afters could exist.

He had been with her for sixty years now. As much as she didn't want to admit, he was right all along, and, she was secretly happy that he was. He was the love of her life. They met when they were twenty three and had celebrated every anniversary like it was their first, giving each other the chance to experience their universe that they had so lovingly built together.

The love of his life, the woman he promised to share his love with till his last breath, was dying now. He could see her going away from him, but, this time, he couldn't fight with the world or her to keep her back. He would break a little every time the doctor stepped into the room, scared he would have a bad news for him.

The woman he wanted to spend every waking moment with, is gone now. It's been two years and he still yearns for her the way he did before he asked her to marry him. But, he knows the beauty of patience and will wait till it's time to go home to her, to his safe place.

He forgets often now. Sees a little more blur now. Is hard of hearing. But, he'll never forget his first love.
