The day she grew up

The yellow light lingered in the background while she sat on her bed, frozen by what she had just seen.

She was trembling with fear and knew that nothing but his soft embrace could calm her down. She missed him dearly. They had been together for five years now and were head over heels in love with each other. Sure, they had their fights and disagreements, but, they worked on them patiently whilst appreciating each other’s opinions.

She had turned 23 last September and he was 25. They had met in College and had clicked instantly. He was her first love and despite her promise to herself to save her virginity for her husband, she made love to him. She had made an informed decision and hadn’t regretted it once.

Until today.

She looked down at the test again. It still indicated a positive. She was pregnant.

She was 23, unmarried and, pregnant. She couldn’t absorb what had happened. They had been careful. Then, how did it happen? She tried calling him, but, he hadn’t picked up. A chill ran down her spine when she envisaged the circumstance without him.

She was weak at heart and extremely trusting. The past 5 years had been all about him. She had few friends in the city and none she could rely upon for this. She thought about her parents. Her heart was overwhelmed with guilt. They had always been trusting with her and respected her choices. She felt shameful, as though she had let them down. Telling them what had happened was not an option. She couldn’t put them through this.

Ever since she could remember, she wanted to become a mother. When she was 6, her mother was pregnant. She remembered how radiant and happy her mother looked, especially, after her younger sister was born. She had the perfect family. Loving parents and a sister that looked up to her.

Just before she was about to break in to tears, her phone started to ring. It was him. He could sense the tension in her voice without her having to say anything. He rushed to her place and found her sitting on the bed. He saw the test in her hand. He silently walked up to her, lifted her head and wiped her tears. He enclosed her into a hug and held her tight.

Everything had been spoken in that one gesture. She held onto him tightly feeling her nerves calm as she did. What was going to happen next didn’t matter in that moment.
She knew they’d find the right path. She just knew it.
